SRD: Observations on the statements by Indradyumna Maharaj and BB Govinda Swami.

“The best apology is a change in behavior”.

A good apology is necessarily going to be self-incriminating. The greater the crime, the more difficult and excruciating a good apology will need to be.
Such an apology will require the death of our false self image ... But most of all, a good apology is only good if it is followed by a rectification of the conduct that makes the apology necessary in the first place!

A good apology from a leader who is also a spiritual authority is as rare as a black swan!

When the apology is required on account of severe Vaishnava Aparada, it can only be effective if it is coming from a place of radical honesty, it is then also a necessary step for our rectification and spiritual progress...

In reading the statements made by Sivaram Swami (SRS), Indradyumna Swami (IDS) and BB Govinda Swami (BBGS), I get the sense that they are unable or unwilling to acknowledge the magnitude of the problem before them and the gravity of the responsibility for their complicity. It would seem that they have been living in a bubble, where they managed to suppress constructive feedback for so long, to the point that they are now completely disconnected from reality.

It is interesting to see the progression of their respective statements. Sivaram swami / SRS started out attacking the CPO, saying that Anirdhesh Vapu (AV) was to be considered saintly and that ISKCON owed him financial compensation.

The feedback he got was harsh and likely not what he expected. Then IDS wrote a public statement where he fully endorsed the CPO, but claimed that he didn't see any red-flags and really went out of his way to try and exonerate himself of any and all responsibility, blaming those 'bad GBCs'. Maharaj claimed that if only he had known he would have reported AV to the GBCs and to the police!

Indradyumna Maharaj initially left the comments on his Facebook post open, but then when he didn't like the feedback he was getting, he decided to retreat to his safe space where he shuts down unpleasant feedback, he deleted all the messages and closed the comments.

BBGS was the last one to come forward and he tried to avoid the pitfalls of his two friends. He also expressed support of the CPO, and told us that AV should be subjected to the full punishment of the law, but by and large he also made his best effort to absolve himself of any prior knowledge and responsibility. He presented a picture where he was mostly ignorant of the severity of AV's crimes against children, which was disingenuous at best!

Having learned the lesson, from the start he never made comments available on his post.

On the surface SRS's letter was by far the worse, he was way off the charts on the 'outrageous statements' scale... Though he probably didn't plan for his letter to get out, at least his letter was the most honest of the three!

Recently we all saw a letter dated 25th of April 2000, from Badrinarayana prabhu to BBGS where he spelled out some of the atrocious torture that AV inflicted on Vaishnava children...That letter alone, in and of itself, should have been more than enough to gain a good understanding of the gravity of the crimes AV was committing against ISKCON's children!

But somehow BBGS now expects the devotee community to believe that he didn't really know and he just wasn't very astute...

It is true that up until recently very few people knew that AV had been sexually abusing children, but it is also true that already by 2000 BBGS was in possession of all the information a responsible leader needed to understand that AV needed to be removed from any involvement with children ASAP!

The posts made by IDS and BBGS come across as though they made a real effort to craft clever, politically correct and savvy statements, aimed at the preservation of their image, taking minimum personal responsibility and designed for maximum damage control.

But as far as genuine, authentic and remorseful apologies go, they rate very low indeed!

No red flags here prabhu, honest!

Instead of acknowledging and demonstrating that they actually understand the gravity of their actions. Showing that they regret their complete disregard for the suffering and torture that AV inflicted on his victims and how they now recognize that their careless endorsement of this known child abuser constituted a slap in the face of their victims and enabled him to abuse more children...

Instead of admitting what everyone knows, which is that they are complicit for enabling a known child abuser, they stood up there and lied to the entire devotee community.

'I didn't see any red flags, we didn't know! But we are really sorry! We care about the victims!

A poor apology that attempts to avoid responsibility is actually an insult to the offended.

They then went onto virtue signal and let everyone know that they went to Mayapur to comfort and counsel the victims and that they are giving them some unspecified amount of financial support...

Those were not apologies! They are insults to the victims and the intelligence of the entire devotee community!

IDS and BBGS have amply demonstrated over the years that they don't know the first thing about recognizing and preventing child abuse!
What makes them think that somehow they are now qualified to counsel and offer moral support to the victims?

After everything that has happened in this horror story, they somehow concluded that it was a good idea for Sannyasis to go and comfort young women for the sexual abuse they enabled!

PADA is bogus for defending children from abuse because

"They Are Getting Their Karma." Yeepers!

If IDS was married to any one of the many swooning girls that have been surrounding him for decades, she would never tolerate the amount of flirting that he regularly engages in with so many young women!

If most people witnessed any other man of IDS's age interact with children the way he does, they would call the police, or at the very least ask him to stop!
IDS said that he 'didn't see any red flags', that's probably because many of his interactions with children constitute red flags!

A married man wouldn't get away with this, but somehow, as a society, we have grown used to tolerating and accepting this behaviour from a celibate Sannyasi renunciant...

By accepting this conduct, we enable it!

Some devotees claim that he has finally understood the improper nature of his interactions with women and children and has now stopped. While others claim that now he instructs his disciples to not take photos when he is with children.
Devotees need transparency and accountability!

It would be helpful to have a public statement from IDS himself to clarify where exactly he stands on this issue now!

Maharaj, have you actually stopped? If you have stopped, why did you stop? Do you think that your conduct was unacceptable or did you only stop because of public pressure?

The most recent statement by the GBCs regarding AV confirms that he continued to give initiations after he had been asked to stop. This lends credibility to the allegations that IDS gave ritvik initiations on behalf of AV. Shortly after the allegations came out, the video of that specific initiation was removed from youtube.

Indradyumna Maharaj could you confirm or deny these allegation?

Is it true that you pressured some of your disciples who had taken their children out of AV's gurukula to send them back?

BBGS I understand that you recently wrote a private letter to the GBCs regarding AV, would you kindly share it with the devotee community?

A good apology would have included a full admission of responsibility, an admission of the simple truth, which is that for years none of these leaders cared enough about the suffering of hundreds of vaishnava children, to actually prioritize their safety and protection!

For if they did, they would have made their own inquiries and they would have easily discovered that AV was not a person to be trusted around children.
They would have then done everything in their power to ensure that AV was removed from any involvement with children. That is what a responsible leader would have done!

A good apology will include a pledge to personally take it upon yourselves to ensure that AV's crimes are reported to the local police and US authorities!
If you want to be regarded as Sannyasis, you have to actually BE Sannyasis, with all the duties and responsibilities that come with the ashram, otherwise you are simply ridiculing the Sannyas ashram, Srila Prabhupada's movement and yourselves.

NH wrote an insightful and heartfelt letter to IDS, the overwhelming sincerity that is conveyed by N is all but absent in Maharaj's own public statement.

“I have made an honest and open public statement and I rest my case. Perhaps we should begin a discussion on the qualifications of a proper disciple and his or her etiquette in dealing with the spiritual preceptor”.

Instead of affording N the consideration that his letter deserved. Maharaj decided to gaslight him, blow him off and hide behind talks of etiquette.

IDS appears oblivious to the fact that his public statement did not convey a whole lot of honesty and that the manner in which he has behaved as a Sannyasi and handled this entire AV affair from the very beginning, is a long series of breaches of Vaishnava etiquette, one after the other!

The truth is that the house is on fire, thousands of children have been humiliated, injured and abused, many are scarred for life, these are crimes that would warrant lengthy jail times.

For decades ISKCON's leaders have by and large shown very little to zero real concern for the suffering of these devotee children. The importance for subordinates to follow etiquette so that the false ego of these leaders can feel comfortable is NOT the priority here! Besides, I do not honestly believe that N could have said what he needed to say in a way that IDS would have found 'respectful of appropriate etiquette'.

Or as Sulochana would say, "They are promoting b*tt sex pooja." Which explains why they had to have him assassinated. Sulochana said these pedo-guru lover thugs will kill me, and -- they did. 

I remember that when I was in Gurukula in Vrindavana, outside the house of SRS and BBGS there was a plaque that said something along the lines of: “This house belongs to the devotees of the British Yatra”. The last time I visitied Vrindavana the plaque was gone!

A good apology would have included a pledge to put an and to your life of extravagant and frivolous luxury. A pledge to sell your penthouses in Mayapur and Vrindavana and donate all the money to the CPO for the protection of the Vaishnava children whose abuse you have enabled.

A pledge to actually honor your Sannyas vows and put an end to your excessive, inappropriate and intimate association with women and children. A pledge to live a life of austerity, simplicity, truthfulness and fearlessness.

If the direct disciples of Srila Prabhupada do not strictly follow their Sannyas vows, those that look upto them and come after will simply perpetuate the circus!

Devotees are tired! Tired of the abuse, tired of the manipulation and exploitation, of the sentimentality, of the cosmetic fixes, tired of the nonsense and the political games!

Can we have some good old fashioned humbling and raw honesty from our leaders?

As someone who experienced abuse in ISKCON I have turned my trauma into something useful. I just finished reading ’Preventing Sexual Abuse in Congregations’ by Karen McClintock. I found this book very enlightening. The problem with many ISKCON congregations is that they do not have clear well defined policies, or education on preventing abuse.

The narcissist monk in ISCKON who abused me, did not have a clear understanding of what his scope of practice was, nor did he have a clear understanding on what his roll as a monk required of him. Why is it that there are no guidelines or regular psychological evaluations for leadership? Most ministries require psychological evaluations for their leaders to protect congregants.

When I reported abused I noticed that the GBC did not respond to me for two years after I put in multiple complaints, and our temple president was more focused on getting me to shut up and doing anything about the abuse. After one psychiatric hospitalization and years of anti-depressants I am still struggling with memories of the abuse.
