[PADA: There are devotees out there sending me links to "Milk is Murder" web sites etc. And they want me to promote the Vegan ("no milk") diet. First of all, I believe Srila Prabhupada is well aware that USA milk cows are not always treated very well, and they are eventually slaughtered. Yet he authorized us to buy supermarket milk.
At the same time, a devotee from India told me that cows on dairy farms in America are practically in heaven -- when compared to how so many cows are uncared for and suffering badly in India. And even the so-called "cared for" cows are often skinny and unhealthy looking compared to big fat USA cows.
So yes, the cows are not treated very well anywhere practically speaking. Yet Srila Prabhupada had us go out to the supermarket and buy milk. And we bought butter and made ghee etc. So it does seem like Srila Prabhupada wanted us to make the best of a bad bargain and get supermarket milk products.
Meanwhile, he also wanted us to get our own farms and have our own cows and milk. That was never really done fully. So it seems we have to fall back to his original system -- of having us buy supermarket milk.
I also do not believe the Vegan diet by itself is fully healthy, because milk gives us special types of nutrition for the finer brain cells etc. Meanwhile, I do not think that Krishna should be offered only Vegan when He loves milk products. We are supposed to be serving Krishna, and that is the process the acharya gave us, buy supermarket milk and offer that to Krishna. And take it yourself. That is the system he authorized, and I do not feel it is my job to change the system he authorized. ys pd]
