Pratyatosa: It was common knowledge within ISKCON, at the time, that Srila Prabhupada condoned using corporal punishment to try to "tame" one's wife. Was this a misunderstanding of Srila Prabhupada on the part of the ISKCON leaders? Perhaps it was. In any case, we had no way of knowing at the time.
[PADA: None of us ever heard that Srila Prabhupada had "condoned" big muscles fat men -- beating little teeny women, or beating anyone else (like children). This was never our understanding, nor did we see anyone EVER getting ANY approval for this behavior in any letters from Srila Prabhupada, or in any other conversations, talks, or lectures. In sum, there is no evidence he ever said he condoned beating women, period. That he "condoned" this was also never "common knowledge" -- since none of us ever heard he "condoned" this behavior. Rather this was what some of the anti-women leaders were preaching. If this idea is "common knowledge," why is this idea not verified in any documentation? We thank you Pratyatosa for helping us get the Windle Turley lawsuit together to help the molested children, however on this women mistreatment point, you do not have my support. Srila Prabhupada is always being blamed for all kinds of abuses in ISKCON, but he never condoned any abuse to anyone, period. ys pd]
