[PADA: It is sad that ritual animal slaughter is still considered as a religious practice in various places, including by bogus Goddess Kali worshipers in India. "Stunning the animal first," seems like there is a least some sort of mercy being called for.
My friend used to work in chicken factory where they clamped the chickens feet to a conveyor belt, so their heads were down at the bottom. Then the belt lowered the chicken's heads into an electrified pool of water where they were both electrocuted and drowned at the same time. Most people cringe at hearing about that, because they have no idea where their supermarket's chickens come from.
All of this slaughter, whether religious ritual -- or at some factory farming outfit, is alleged to be authorized by their religion. That is why Kali Yuga is said to be making religion into irreligion -- and irreligion into religion.
Animals were not slaughtered in Vedic culture, and anyone caught killing an animal was punished. We are a long way from that system. The only good news is, more and more people are standing up for at least some form of "animal rights." That means people are starting to recognize animals as sentient beings who should be treated with at least some amount dignity and mercy.
A devotee just told PADA that some of his relatives, whom he would never have expected to quit eating meat, have just now quit eating meat and they are getting away from animal products. So it is turning the corner, albeit slowly.
