Hema Malini / Pranab Mukherjee at Lord Chaitanya Festival

Agra/Mathura: President Pranab Mukherjee, clearly at pains to reiterate his anxieties on rising intolerance in the country, especially after Dadri, on Wednesday spoke about Chaitanya's arrival in Vrindavan some 500 years ago and wondered if tolerance and "acceptance of dissent" are on the wane in India, a country, he said, has "amazed" the world in the past with its unity in diversity. "People should learn from Sri Chaitanya," he said.
Addressing a gathering of more than a thousand people, including ascetics, scholars and Krishna devotees, at a function organized to celebrate the 500th year of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu's advent in Vrindavan's Parmeshwari Devi Dhanuka Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Mukherjee said there are seven major religions being practised in India, more than 100 languages are spoken here and over 1,600 dialects are used in the country — an excellent example of unity in diversity.
"Living with diversity, finding unity in diversity has been practised in India for centuries. This has amazed people across the globe — how India, in one system of administration, in one Constitution, in one way of legal jurisprudence and functioning, has managed to remain united," he said.
The President laid emphasis on civilizational values as the reason for the country living together with 128 crore people, the second largest population in the world, representing almost all major religions of the world.
"All three major ethnic groups, Dravidians, Caucasians and Mongoloids, live in one piece of land. In the whole of north-eastern India, you will find concentration of Mongoloid people. The whole of south India, you will find Dravidian people and in north and north-west, (there are) people belonging to Caucasians group. All these major ethnic groups live in one state. It has been possible because of our cultural values, civilizational values, which have been taught to us over centuries and which has descended on us and we have nurtured it, which is a part of life and therefore it is no cliche to us," the President added.
Ever since the Dadri lynching and subsequent events, Mukherjee has been repeatedly appealing for tolerance and pluralism.
Citing teachings of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a revered monk and a reformer in medieval India, he said that people should learn the lesson of love, service, humanity and communal harmony from the saint who devoted his life to society. The event was also attended by UP governor Ram Naik, Mathura MP Hema Malini, leader of UP Congress legislative party Pradeep Mathur.
Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav, who was also expected to attend the programme, left Vrindavan soon after welcoming the President at the helipad. A souvenir highlighting Radha Tattva, a Vedic concept defined by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, was also released on the occasion.

The celebrations were organised by Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Brij Vrindavan Arrival 500th Anniversary Mahotsav, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu preached love, equality, humanity and harmony. He urged the people to adopt this message of the great saint and recharge the society.
President Mukherjee said Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was one of the greatest saints of the Bhakti movement.
“He was responsible for the popularity of Vaishnavism in Bengal through his Kirtans, which were unparalleled in lyricism and beauty. Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu preached and spread loving devotional service and congregational chanting through personal demonstration. He propagated the cult of devotion by personally practicing it,” he said.
The President said living with diversity and finding unity in diversity has been practised in India over centuries.
“Many people wonder how it is possible for India to accommodate so much diversity within one system of administration, one Constitution and one legal jurisprudence,” he said.
The President said the answer lies in our civilisational values.
“India’s unity has been possible because of our cultural and civilisational values. We have inherited these over centuries and have nurtured it. It is now a part of our life,” he added.
President Mukherjee said Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s teachings continue to have great relevance in the contemporary world.

Hema Malini, the local MP, was the most unabashedly devotional in her remarks. She began with “Radhe Radhe!” She also started her talk with a verse from Chaitanya Chandramrita. She was the only speaker other than the hosts to recite a Sanskrit verse:
ānanda-līlā-maya-vigrahāya
hemābha-divya-cchavi-sundarāya
tasmai mahā-prema-rasa-pradāya
caitanya-candrāya namo namas te
I offer my obeisances unto Sri Chaitanya Chandra, whose body is the embodiment of an ecstatic pastime, whose beauty is divinely beautiful, a picture of golden light, and who is the giver of the highest taste of supreme love of God. (Caitanya-candramrtam)
Hema remarked that Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s visit had set into motion the growth and development of Vrindavan-Mathura and that she was committed to the advance of the people of the district, especially in preserving and spreading the cultural contributions of the region. She also remarked that she has a special feeling for Radha Raman since Gopal Bhatta heralded from Srirangam, where she herself was born.

Preaching is not easy in the mad house (Srila Prabhupada)

My dear beloved disciples, Please accept my blessings. I know that over the past years you have suffered so many tribulations to push forward Krsna consciousness in Germany. But this has not stopped you from your determination to serve the cause of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
A devotee is pleased when there is difficulty, for in these difficulties he is forced to remember Krsna. We cannot expect that the people of Kali-yuga will welcome our attempt to spread Krsna consciousness. It is just like a lunatic asylum: The patients are running around madly and when the doctor tries to give them treatment, they insist that they are not crazy. Sometimes the patient even strikes the doctor. So our task is like that.
We cannot stand to see people suffering due to ignorance. What is that ignorance? They do not know that they are not their body. This Krsna consciousness movement is meant to deliver people to the proper understanding that they are not their body, that they are pure spirit soul. We may or may not be appreciated, that is not our concern. We must execute the order of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu which is:
Yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa
amara ajna guru haya tara ei desa
(CC Madhya 7.128)
amara ajna guru haya tara ei desa

"Whomever you meet, instruct them to follow the orders of Sri Krsna as they are given in the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam. In this way by My order become a spiritual master and try to liberate everyone in this land."
So our business is to satisfy the acaryas and Krsna. If they are pleased then we know our work is successful.

Go on spreading the sankirtana movement more and more. I am only one person, but because all of you have kindly cooperated with me, this movement has now become a success all over the world. Be assured that there is no more direct way to preach than to distribute Krsna conscious books. Whoever gets a book is benefitted. If he reads the book he is benefitted still more, or if he gives the book to someone else for reading, both he and the other person is benefited.
Even if one does not read the book but simply holds if and sees it, he is benefitted. If he simply gives small donation towards the work of Krsna consciousness he is benefitted. And anyone who distributes these transcendental literatures, he is also benefitted. Therefore sankirtana is the prime benediction for the age:
krsna varnam tvisa krsna sango vangastra parsadam
yajnaih sankirtana prayair yajanti sumedhasah
(SB 11.5.32)

Gaura Krishna Goswami leaves his body

[PADA: He was born in 1964, that makes him fairly younger man. I am not sure what caused his departure (a heart attack?).
What surprises me all the time is -- how all these India (GBC) goswamis are hitching their spiritual wagon to the GBC's guru program's donkey, which states that acharyas are often fallen and debauchees. Why are they attracted to that program at all?
And why don't they instead join us -- to promote the idea that acharyas are pure and not fallen? For that matter, how come our old friends like Ravindra swarupa, Gunagrahi, Rupanuga, Bhakta das and many other of our God brothers are attracted to this GBC guru program, which promotes the idea that God's gurus, messiahs, successors and parampara members are usually, fallen and degraded?
Why would anyone want to join a program which openly states that God's gurus and successors are often fallen fools who are chasing skirts, dope, money etc.? I just do not get it. I have to admit, it also seems a little strange to me that a younger person in apparent good health would suddenly die like this.
Of course dying in the holy land is nice, but it may not be sufficient in itself to recover fully from promoting these false acharyas. ys pd

The passing away of HH Gaura Krishna Maharaja happened very suddenly. Just a few days ago he was looking perfectly healthy and was walking along nicely. Even yesterday he was just the same, looking in perfect health. His departure just happened suddenly this morning.
Of course perfect atmosphere in Vrindavan during the month of kartika. Best situation for passing from this material world. But another lesson we get from this is uselessness of us making plans of this material world of our continued existence.
The only plan to be made is how to execute perfect Krishna consciousness so that when we have to leave our body, it will be a just transfer from one environment to another. The material body is fragile, it's never under our control, that's why it can be taking away at anytime. A Vaisnava should therefore plan to die in order to live. He took sanyasa earlier this year.

I'm hoping you will publish the following article about my new recording at Krishna1008 (or elsewhere). You may decide it's not your thing to publish it at all, and that's OK too, but I hope you do publish it. If in doubt, have a listen online to a song or two before deciding to publish.
Thanks for your ongoing dedication to preserving the legacy and available mercy, inspiration and guidance of Srila Prabhupada. You are courageous and truthful...two great attributes. I was initiated by one of the magnificent eleven in 1981, but have always felt Srila Prabhupada's prominent guidance every step of the way...and that's proof enough for me.

Hare Krishna
All glories to Srila Prabhupada and all the Vaishnava devotees.
Announcing the eagerly awaited (by myself and a few friends at least) recent release of my first studio album, 'More Than I Give' by Rakshana and The Brave Clown.
Srila Prabhupada wanted us to read his books and present realisations in a manner that will benefit our chosen audience.
“Just read from my books and try and explain the meaning in your own words.” (Letter, 73-01-26)
“You must all study all of the books so that when the need arises you can repeat in your own words their purport.” (Letter, 72-01-06)
“By writing according to our realization we become more and more convinced and all doubts are destroyed.” (Letter, 75-11-15)
“Everything is there in our books; so learn it and put in your own way by reproducing. You are also materially well-educated so reproduce what I have taught in your own language. These things are new thoughts in your western countries, everyone will be interested...” (Letter, 72-5-1)
Holding these and similar instructions close to heart, I write a lot of songs and poetry. At present I have a backlog of approximately 100 songs that I hope (Krishna willing) to record in due course of time. I don't consider myself qualified to write scripture, although anyone who knows me well also knows I'm at my best when discussing Srila Prabhupada and the philosophy of Krishna consciousness. The songs on More Than I Give are all directly inspired by Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna, albeit without being in-your-face or preachy.
The songs don't overtly include the maha mantra, but many of them highlight the form, qualities and pastimes of the Lord and his pure devotee, along with my own small steps in realisation and appreciation, almost as a diary would. Many of my songs earmarked for future recording are more obviously Hare Krishna...it's a case of in like a needle, out like a plough. More Than I Give is for both devotees and the general listening public.
I've noticed a lack of quality western-style songs dedicated to Krishna consciousness. It's surprising really, as so many people join this movement with musical talent, and music is such a large part of our culture. There are plenty of chants, hymns and bhajan recordings, and that's great, but my leaning is toward western lyrics for western listeners (except during temple programs, at which time I'm a mridunga and karatal man). Of course, nothing beats listening to Srila Prabhupada sing, accompanied by his magical harmonium playing, but that's another level entirely. Sanskrit and Bengali are beautiful languages, but foreign to me, and even most devotees don't know the literal translation of the songs we sing in the temple on a daily basis, so English songs have their place.
I hope my recording is pleasing to at least some devotees, although it's imperfectly composed, and with the occasional blemish. More Than I Give was recorded old-fashioned analogue reel-to-reel style, all with actual instruments, and without any of the digital chicanery found on most modern recordings. It was then further polished somewhat in a professional mastering studio. I recorded and mastered it with the expert assistance of my old school friend, Dave Brown (Brave Clown).
I'm not in the business of making money off the mercy of Srila Prabhupada and Lord Krishna, and so have organised distribution of More Than I Give by Rakshana and The Brave Clown in hard copy and digital download for sale, plus numerous free streaming, download and listening sites online.

Bhakti Vikas Swami Struggles with "Controversies"
[PADA: What? We "presume" that -- Srila Prabhupada wanted conditioned souls to be Krishna's successor gurus? And he wanted the parampara to continue (with neophytes?). Srila Prabhupada wanted extensive book edits? Srila Prabhupada said he was being given poison, but its "very offensive" to agree with his statements? Why?
A woman also asks BVKS if she should be the secretary of her sannyasa guru? He says the woman should refuse the offer to be the secretary, good advice. He also says the sannyasa should not have a female secretary because it can lead to fall down. OK what kind of gurus does BVKS have if they are prone to fall? Where was BVKS when all his previous acharyas were falling down left, right and center due to "attraction to liquid beauty"?
Why is he not taking up the current problems of some of his contemporaries and their "female assistants," and why did he not address the past problems very forcefully? And why would he even have to discuss acharyas falling for liquid beauty in the first place, since even a Madhyama devotee does not fall for liquid beauty?

[PADA: Kamsahanta is giving a good account here. Good job! Kamsahanta says Indradyumna is another thug who has Srila Prabhupada's devotees banned from ISKCON. And he is associated with the Babajis of Radha Kunda. Yep, the sannyasa order and guru platform has deteriorated severely under the current so-called GBC guru program. The question this raises is very self-evident, why is the entire GBC promoting this program? Then again the GBC buried Kirtanananda in the holy dham, what else is new? ys pd]
