A devotee realizes that his only hope is to seek protection of Krishna. He loses faith in his own ability to protect himself against maya. On the path of devotional service there are many pit falls. When a devotee is not proud of his spiritual strength, it is an ornament for him.
What if one thinks of Prabhupada at the time of death?
Madhusudana: One thing that really impressed me was when Prabhupada got a stroke early on and not too long after I joined in 1967. He was in the hospital in Manhattan and the devotees just didn't know what to do.
