SRD: The following is a letter I wrote in response to Nrishimanada Prabhu on the 11th of December 2023 where I try to address some of the current problems in the Vrindavana Gurukula.
Hare Krsna Nrsimhananda prabhu,
Please accept my respectful obeisances, All Glories to Srila Prabhupada.
I pray that you please find it in your heart to forgive the offenses I am about to make. I simply do not have the skill and the intelligence to respond to your letter in a respectful manner.
The naivety that pervades your letter is both heart breaking and astonishing! It tells me that you have learned nothing from 50 years of child abuse in ISKCON, but yet, this does not stop you from jumping in to endorse a school that has one of the worst track records in ISKCON's history.
The quote comes to mind 'Fools rush in where angels fear to thread'.
You seem oblivious to the fact that the thought process that underpins your letter is precisely why and how BVP and so many others were able (and enabled) to continue abusing children for so many years.
'Nothing happened in the last (fill in the blank) years, why are you making such a big deal about old news? I just visited the school, their 'vedic' mud huts are very aesthetically pleasing, the prasadam was cooked on cow dung fire, the mantras were cool and I didn't see any kids getting assaulted! Things are different now, stop being so negative'!
Everything is great in wonderland! Allegations of abuse are fake news!
It is precisely this narrative that allows known offenders to continue having access to children!
Let's look at some facts.
In 2018 the CPO submitted a report to the GBCs on the Vrindavana Gurukula. The report only covers a relatively short time frame of observation, 73 days.
In the course of these 73 days the CPO uncovered a total of 62 incidents of child abuse with 8 teachers implicated. This is almost one child a day! It is industrial scale child abuse!
Most importantly the report also points out that the school management is not forthcoming about the abuse of children. In other words they cover up child abuse! The nature of the abuse described ranges from sexual, physical, spiritual and emotional. What is particularly significant about this report is that it is the last comprehensive assessment / investigation carried out on the Vrindavana Gurukula.
To this day there is no credible independent oversight in that school. The entire GBC body received this report and voted to keep the school open, with the same management!!!
You make the ludicrous suggestion that somehow the fact that the school has now moved to a different location, invalidates any concerns raised by the reports from the previous location. In spite of the fact that it is run by the very same management.
It is not reasonable to assume that the same management, after receiving no sanctions from the GBCs for the damning and extensive 2018 report, would have now somehow magically decided to drastically change the way they operate, so as to create a safer environment for the children. If anything, the fact that the GBCs allowed them to get away with child abuse coupled with the fact that the school is now in a more remote location is reason for even greater concerns.
PADA: We have heard this same problem a number of times. As the complaints about ISKCON leader's malpractice mis-management increases, the GBC makes access to the program being complained about less accessible. They might block people's emails and won't grant meetings etc.
Very seldom are children abused in plain sight. For a number of reasons, child abuse generally only comes to light 30 to 40 years later, when the victims are finally able and willing to come forward.
If you read the case files of the girls that were in BVP's school, you will get an idea of how deep the deceptionof devious teachers can go. They shared that they were made to rehearse for school visits from senior devotees. To add the extra touch, teachers would put calculus equations on the black board, that had never been explained to the students and that the girls knew nothing about, just to appear as though the quality of their education was much higher than it actually was.
Both of the two devotees you named: Radha Kantha and Lila Purushottam have been personally accused of beating the children in the school and of covering up incidents of child abuse.
In the past they have also forcefully removed CPO representatives from the campus, that had come to inspect the school. Taking into account their track record, if you actually believe that these devotees would be forthcoming with you about any current child abuse problems in the Vrindavana Gurukula, you are even more naive than I realized.
PADA: I don't believe these people are simply naive. The dissenters are systematically shunned, banned, beaten, sued, and maybe killed. This is not just waving off or ignoring the problem, this is a diabolical plot to enforce these abuse programs.
A school that claims to have zero incidents of child abuse is far more suspicious than a school that demonstrates that they have an independent, robust and transparent system to prevent, identify and handle incidents.
When the school making such claim is the Vrindavana Gurukula, with a 40 years track record of child abuse, and no credible independent oversight, you can be almost certain that such claim is inaccurate and dishonest.
You visited the Vrindavana Gurukula in the last year or so and saw a beautiful setting. If children are still being abused, do you honestly believe that you would have seen it?
Pancharatna visited the Vrindavana Gurukula around the same time as you. In some later correspondence he admitted that he had not had the time to interview the faculty and students or carry out an in depth assessment of the school. Yet, just like you, he wrote a glowing 'Kumbaya' report on how good the prasadam was.
If you compare his and your reports to the professional assessment compiled by Navin Krishna's team only a short while earlier, it is apparent that the Vrindavana Gurukula is still a long way from where it needs to be, and that your reports (yours and Pancharatnma's) only highlight your own inadequacies and lack of qualifications to even comment on the subject of safety of children. What to speak of actually carrying out an assessment!
BTW, almost a year later, the GBC is yet to take any meaningful action to address the areas of grave concern raised in NK's report. So why/ how could anyone reasonably believe that 'now everything is fixed'??? The only honest statement both of you (Pancharatna and yourself) could have made is some variation of:
"I had a positive superficial first impression, but I did not carry out the in-depth assessment that the school's history demands, to be able to attest to the safety and well-being of the children in the Vrindavana Gurukula".
Pancharatna, the new director of the recently formed Indian CPO has decided that incidents of sexual abuse should be handled exclusively by the police. At first sight this may seem like an intelligent and even commendable decision!
The CPO has always operated with a standard of evidence, used in civil courts of law, called 'preponderance of evidence'. This is significantly lower than the burden of proof required by criminal courts which is 'beyond reasonable doubt'.
Criminal courts require such a high standard of evidence because, the sanctions that they can impose are extreme. Civil courts on the other hand employ the lower standard because their sanctions are significantly lower.
Given the very limited sanctions that the CPO is able / authorized to impose it is only reasonable that they employ the lower standard of evidence. Introducing the standard of evidence beyond reasonable doubt for the CPO will only favor sex offenders.
The Indian police force does not have the reputation of being particularly responsive or sensitive to matters of child abuse, they also notoriously struggle with bribery. Even if these problems weren't there, for a number of reasons, even in the west, only a small percentage of child sexual abuse cases actually meet the standard of evidence required for a police conviction.
In short by changing the goalposts, Pancharatna has ensured that the India CPO will allow the vast majority of sex offenders that abuse our children will walk free.
It is Important to note that the India CPO was established only after the recent international interest in the Lokanath case.
This change in policy is also attractive to some ISKCON leaders that want to propagate the illusion that the child abuse problem is gone, for this would drastically reduce the number of official child abuse cases in ISKCON, because the majority of cases would not meet the burden of proof required. Naturally this would create a far more dangerous world for our children because we would not take the necessary measure against known offenders.
Pancharatna admitted that he didn't have (make) the time to properly assess the school, presumably because he had other, more pressing matters to attend. I am not aware that he has ever gone back to carry out an in depth assessment of the safety of the children at the Vrindavana Gurukula.
In your situation, as a visiting devotee with no responsibility for the children's well-being, your actions, though reckless, are less problematic, this is not the case with Pancharatna das. As the director of the newly formed Indian CPO, his lackadaisical approach to child protection is unacceptable and alarming! It is reckless, it demonstrates his lack of qualifications for the job.
If ISKCON was a society that actually cared for the protection of its children, this fact alone, in and of itself, would warrant his immediate dismissal.
Both yourself and Pancharatna placed the credibility of your word, seniority and standing in the community to vouch for the safety of the children in the Vrindavana Gurukula, one of the most notorious school in ISKCON's dark history, on the basis of a brief visit to a school, that no reasonable individual would regard as sufficient to make an informed opinion.
Only last year a family I know informed me that they removed their children from the Vrindavana Gurukula, because they found out that children in the school are still being sexually abused. I beg that in the future, you please try to be more mindful of how you (mis)use the credibility that Krishna has given you.
In this instance you did a disservice to the protection of the Vaishnava Children in the Vrindavana Gurukula.
P.S. Bhasu Ghosh, who has stated that a girl is 'fair game after puberty' recommends reporting incidents of child abuse to Daivi Prakriti Mataji, who he says is the vice director for the Indian CPO. She was recently asked to leave the Sri Mayapur International School because she insisted on giving explicit sex education to 5 and 6 year old children.
