ISKCON's Child Protection Office is Compromised

THE GBC EC RIGGED THE LOKANATH MOLESTATION CASE REVIEW BY APPOINTING CHAMPAKALATA TO THEIR AD HOC PANEL

After Champakalata’s abysmal record as ISKCON Child Protection Office Director, many were bewildered that the ISKCON Governing Body Commission (GBC) had appointed her to examine the Lokanath child molestation case. Her appointment may have been for a reason. Since May 2021, when the GBC yanked the Lokanath molestation case back from their Child Protection Office, the GBC EC seemed to have already decided that Lokanath’s child abuse case would be closed, with no further action.

[PADA: First of all, the "guru chain of God's successors" in ISKCON already contains -- according to Jayadvaita swami (Jay Israel) -- "illicit sex with men, women and possibly children." Anyone who is part of their managerial group should already know that they are promoting a pedophile guru chain from square one.] 

A month after the GBC EC told their CPO to stop investigating Lokanath’s child abuse case, GBC Chairman Bhakti Caitanya Swami made it clear that he did not want Lokanath’s case to be given to the CPO. In a leaked video, Bhakti Caitanya Swami said, "And if the panel somehow says that, you know, whatever has been done is enough, then as long as the GBC accepts that, then that’s it."

The GBC-appointed panel was heavily unbalanced from the start, with 40% of the members representing the Indian Continental Committee, who unanimously voted that Lokanath’s child molestation case not be handled by the CPO. Once the GBC EC added Champakalata, who has a history of protecting child abusers, the number changed to 60% in favor of Lokanath being “let off the hook,” as Badrinarayan said in 1999.

During her 7 years as ISKCON Child Protection Office Director, Champakalata squandered child protection funds, used her position to raise her status, and repeatedly dismissed accounts and testimonies from child abuse victims.

As Director, she would report confidential testimony to GBC members who would then meddle with cases, instructing Champakalata how to proceed in order to protect a friend accused of child abuse. In multiple cases, Champakalata is accused of compounding the abuse by gossiping about victims and in a few cases calling them liars.

An ISKCON devotee who had worked with her in the Child Protection Office said: 

“I trained and served as a CPO and judge in the UK under the tutelage of Champakalata dd. It was only when I challenged the status quo, of which she was very much part of, she considered me ‘mentally unstable,’ even though I have never suffered from any mental health issues. 

[PADA: That is what they told me all along. Well Puranjan, you mean you do not want ISKCON's children to worship pedophiles as God's successors? You must be nuts! Even Sanat / Mukunda / Prahlad / HKC Jaipur said "PADA is a mad man"! Of course, anyone who is not a boot licker of the butt buster messiah's project is -- insane!]  

When I kept acting according to my discretion and integrity as a CPO she manoeuvred behind the scenes to get me unceremoniously dismissed from this service. Her lack of transparency, accountability, independence and integrity made her the most unsuitable person to have lead this service. She placed her position and her need to be favoured by her “superiors” above the needs of the victims.” -

Instead of multi-day sessions which are standard for ISKCON CPO trainings, Champakalata spent as little as 2 hours on the trainings, leaving review panel members undereducated and undertrained.

A North American devotee who volunteered with the ISKCON Child Protection Office said, “Champakalata was truly awful.”

Gaurangi (Pia) from England said, “When Champakalata was the CPO Director, she was always on Bir Krishna Goswami’s side.” She was “cruel and rude” and convinced people that the family were lying about their daughter’s sexual assault. Champakalata told BKG everything the family confided in her and refused to tell them what BKG said. "It was a horror from beginning to end."

Puskarini from Sweden said, “She did a CPO tour and also came to Sweden. For a small remote country Sweden has quite a bad track record of child abuse, we had a gurukula and we were about 35 children. Bad stuff, Dallas style. So she came to talk to survivors. She talked to me and promised all kinds of contacts and she would get back to me. 

Later I heard she had branded my story as not credible.”

“She also absolutely wanted to get in contact with my brother on account of the book he wrote. So we arranged for them to speak. My brother said it was all about damage control and she tried to scare him with legal repercussions.” (The book is: My Karma, My Fault about a survivor’s experience of child abuse growing up in ISKCON schools.)

“She spread all kinds of misinformation about the book and my brother. She is not on the side of the survivors.”

“But what I am most upset about was that she made me open up to her and relive all the bad stuff. I did it because I thought some good could come of it. It's not easy to regurgitate the most painful events in your life to a stranger. And then she just left me hanging. Nothing. I've had this with so many devotees that have claimed they want to help but their motives are something else.”

In 2009, the same year Champakalata became the International ISKCON Child Protection Office Director, two boys in her temple community of Durban filed a report with the local temple authority that an adult male devotee tried to molest them. The parents were never notified, and there was no investigation.

In 2010, when Champakalata asked about the 1991 investigation in Mayapur of dozens of boys being raped and molested, she relayed a message from the Mayapur CPT that it was no more than “a play-game and not a CPT issue.”
Champakalata said, “I was never informed about what happened in Mayapur.”

Dhira Govinda was shocked. He said, “Based on my experience as director of the Association for the Protection of Vaisnava Children from 1998-2004, the child maltreatment in Mayapur from the late 1970s through the early 1990s was the most severe in the history of ISKCON. I believe that anyone with even a vague awareness of the history of child abuse in ISKCON would agree that [her] statement says a lot.”

In 2011, complaints were made against Melbourne temple president Aniruddha and his wife Acintya Rupa for child abuse and sexual exploitation of girls going back decades. Champakalata said she would look into it, but no explanation or report was ever given to the people who filed complaints.

Champakalata’s bias in favor of child abusers was evident in her handling of her godsister Sri Radhe’s case. Sri Radhe worked closely with Bhaktividya Purna Swami in the Mayapur gurukula and both were found guilty of child abuse. After being given a lifetime ban from teaching, Champakalata allowed Sri Radhe to successfully appeal even though Sri Radhe did not meet the criteria for an appeals process.

Right before Champakalata was fired in 2016, a case in Mayapur needed resolution. A 25-year-old man was in a relationship with a 14-year-old girl. He was also grooming other girls and took them on an overnight trip to Kolkata. Champakalata kept saying she would look into it and would follow up soon, but she never did. There was ample evidence against this person, with testimonials from the abused children, and she did nothing.

From 2009-2016 Champakalata served as ISKCON Child Protection Office Director and during these seven years, she compounded harm to survivors of child abuse by perverting the course of justice for child abuse cases in ISKCON. As Gaurangi observed, “She was in the pocket of the GBC” and it was for this reason that she was appointed to examine the Lokanath child molestation case. The GBC EC wants the case closed, and that is likely how Champakalata voted - pushing a majority of the panel to vote “case closed” and nothing more to be done.
