Given the sex scandal revelations of Swami Bhakti Aloka Paramadvaiti, born Ulrich Harlan, and the private confession of his serious misconduct, we ask the leaders and all the international community of Gaudiya Vaishnavas to please evaluate the following points with great urgency:

1. Taking advantage of his powerful position as an Acharya or religious authority, B.A. Paramadvaiti has committed repeated offenses against multiple Vaishnavis for more than ten years! He has offended in a premeditated and systematic manner women who are either young, vulnerable or both. He has had illicit sex with them and has sexually assaulted them. Thus, many of these Vaishnavis are still confused, frightened and traumatized by the experience of a paternal figure abusing them.

2. This fault was not a single occasional fault but a secret way of life. B.A. Paramadvaiti has been continually betraying communal trust without any sign of shame. If the scandal had not come to light by Radhakunda, Prisni and Bhavani Dasis, B.A. Paramadvaiti likely would have continued with these types of offenses until the end of his life.

3. Those faults also mean a serious offense to the sannyasi-vesha or sacred garments of the whole sannyasa tradition. That is to say, it is a mockery in front of Shrila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur and the nyasi-shiromani—Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself.

In the light of these concerns, we request the leaders and all members of the international community of Gaudiya Vaishnavas to demand B.A. Paramadvaiti do the following:

1. To publicly apologize, including through his official social networking sites, to the worldwide community of Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu’s followers. Protecting the victims’ identity, he should specify in what way he fell down and devoted himself to live promiscuously, not just give some generic statement about how he deviated from sannyasa-dharma.

2. To completely abandon all positions of honor, namely: step down from the sannyasa-ashram and no longer wear saffron colored vestments; to resign from the position of Acharya; to no longer serve as Guru (which implies not accepting the Vyasa-puja and vyasasana) and to no longer allow his disciples initiate in his name (ritviks).

3. Above all, he must privately make amends to all the women he violated expressing sincere, uninhibited remorse. Because it is reasonable to expect that some may not want any contact, such amends should be made through the medium of a neutral and professional third party. Should any victim be in need of psychological or physical help as a result of his abuse of power, he should offer some financial assistance even if that requires drastic changes on his part.

4. Making it clear to his disciples that these changes are, in fact, his desire, he must promise publicly and reliably that he will comply with all the above points.

Any Vaishnava who reads this petition should considers that, although it is possible that there will always be philosophical differences between our groups, in no way can we allow a Guru to become a sexual predator and walk with impunity among us. If we do not try to stop this trend, what will be the future that our daughters and sons will face? What kind of Vaishnavism are we building today?
