Janmashtami is the yearly observance of Krishna‘s appearance on earth. It is one of the world’s most widely observed spiritual festivals. Krishna’s “birth,” janma, occurred at midnight on ashtami, the eighth day after the full moon in the Vedic calendar.

Krishna’s appearance is significant on many levels, and is something of a paradox. He’s the beginningless Supreme Person, eternally existing everywhere at all times. He isn’t “born” like we’re are—forced by karma into a succession of material bodies. Krishna appears in His same permanent, spiritual form whenever and wherever He likes.

When He does appear, He chooses His devotees to play the roles of His father and mother. He Himself plays the role of their child, and acts like a human being, while also performing superhuman activities that are impossible for anyone else to imitate.

Krishna explains in the Bhagavad-gita that He appears time after time in this world, in His original form, to reestablish religious principles, deliver His devotees from material existence, and annihilate the wicked. He also says that those who hear about and understand the nature of His appearance and activities no longer have to undergo repeated birth and death, but return to live with Him in the spiritual world.

Devotees of Krishna most commonly celebrate Janmashtami by:

Visiting their local Krishna temple, especially to attend the grand midnight worship ceremony.

Chanting extra rounds of the Hare Krishna mantra on beads or in kirtan.

Reading and hearing about Krishna‘s pastime of appearing in this world, from the Tenth Canto of the Srimad-Bhagavatam or Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Worship: Those who have a Krishna Deity in their home may offer Him new clothing, gorgeously decorate the altar, and cook Him a multi-course feast.

Fasting until midnight

GBC corruption in Azerbaijan: statement to the Prosecutor General's Office.

According to official GBC documents, Azerbaijan is in Russia's zone of influence. Curator - Achyutatma Prabhu (GBC for Russia). It is in the Azerbaijani GBC ISKCON community that reports to him that large-scale corruption schemes are being uncovered.

Member of the Union of Artists of Azerbaijan, sculptor, author of monuments to Heydar Aliyev, devotee of GBC ISKCON, initiated by Gopal Krishna in 2004, Ramakanta das (Rashid Huseynov) filed a statement to Prosecutor General Kamran Aliyev.

Facts from the statement:

August 2024 - theft of $100 out of $200 transferred to a preacher from Rostov-on-Don.

The President of the community Madhava Chaitanya Prabhu (Mahir Akhmedov) confessed to giving bribes to an official of the State Committee for Religious Affairs:

• 3,000 manat ($1,830)

• 5,000 manat ($3,050)

2023–2024: the community received over 40,000 manat (~$24,400), while:

• part of the funds were embezzled;
• no reporting;
• evidence is ignored by the State Committee.

After Janmashtami 2024 — a donation box was opened (~8,000 manat / ~$4,880), F. Nasreddinzade is accused of involvement.

Construction of a bathroom — expenses are inflated by 2 times.

September 2024 – July 2025 — 44,000 manat (~$26,800) spent from a donation card without reporting.

Applicant's demands:

Independent investigation of embezzlement and corruption. Verification of employees of the State Committee for Religious Affairs. Bringing all involved to justice.

Ramakanta das: "My goal is to restore justice, legality and spiritual purity. May Lord Krishna grant everyone honesty, integrity and faith in the truth."
