For Immediate Release: Memorial Service for Steven Bryant (Sulochan dasa) scheduled for May 22, 2018, in Los Angeles, California
A memorial service for the American Hare Krishna devotee and initiated disciple of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada—the Founder/Acharya for the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)—who was brutally assassinated on May 22, 1986, will be held on the 32nd anniversary of his murder. The ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. at the intersection of Flint and Cardiff Avenues in Los Angeles, California (less than a mile from the ISKCON temple), where he was shot twice in the head with a handgun by a disciple of Kirtanananda Swami, the ISKCON “guru” for West Virginia.
Steven Bryant (Sulochan dasa) had written a book—The Guru Business—in which he exposed rampant corruption within the Hare Krishna movement. He had targeted two ISKCON gurus in particular, Kirtanananda Swami and Ramesvara Maharaja—whose followers and disciples, which included “spiritual” leaders, administrators and hit men from West Virginia, Ohio and Southern California temples, under orders from their “gurus”—stalked the passionate reformer in West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan and California, and eventually hunted their quarry down and murdered him in Los Angeles near the ISKCON temple.
Sulochan was far from a perfect example of a strict Vaishnava and he did advocate violence against the gurus, but despite his faults he is nevertheless lauded for his courageous attempt to expose corruption in the Hare Krishna movement. After his murder, one police officer noted, “Bryant was a martyr for his faith. He was one lone voice in the wilderness and he was killed because he talked about corruption. He went up against the heavyweights and lost.”
Speakers at the memorial service will include Naranarayan dasa Visvakarma (ACBSP) (Nathan Zakheim), the former BBT Art Director and a personal friend of Sulochan, Mahatma dasa (Mario Pineda), and Henry Doktorski, the author of a book about the conspiracy to murder Sulochan dasa: Killing For Krishna: The Danger of Deranged Devotion.
Others who have been invited to speak include Kailasa-Chandra (Sulochan’s editor for The Guru Business), Puranjana (Sulochan’s best friend), Eric Johanson (formerly Radha-Vrindaban Chandra Swami, a disciple of Hamsadutta who claimed his life was changed by Sulochan’s book The Guru Business), and others. Nori J. Muster (formerly Nandini dasi), and ISKCON Public Relations Assistant who was friendly with Sulochan, has written a eulogy which will be read at the ceremony. Perhaps Tirtha in prison—the trigger man—may send his apology and condolences from prison by letter.
The memorial service will take place on the sidewalk near the intersection of Flint and Cardiff Avenues. It will include kirtan and may feature other speakers who will share their memories of Sulochan. The general public is invited to attend. A video of the service will be uploaded to YouTube.
