The Role of Ritviks in 1970s ISKCON

Amar Puri has accused His Grace Purujit Prabhu of ulterior motives because of his not mentioning a portion of Srila Prabhupada’s purport to SB.7.3.30. Let’s see the context then. Purujit Prabhu quotes Srila Prabhupada regarding the qualification of a person to conduct vedic rituals, how one becomes inspired by the Lord Himself to perform sacrifices when he becomes advanced in vedic knowledge.

That is the main point and consideration -- the qualification of one to become a vedic priest. The ommited portion of the purport, which Amar Puri has with great pomp and expectation put forward, deals simply with the technical detail about the number and name of the rtviks used in vedic sacrificial ceremonies. My question about how many rtviks did Srila Prabhupada use to perform the initiations and other ceremonies in his movement remained unanswered by Amar Puri. Did Srila Prabhupada use 4 rtviks -- the ¨hotā, adhvaryu, brahma and udgātā.¨? Let’s take a look into his instructions:

Letter to: Hanuman — Bombay 4 October, 1973 :
Now just as all my other disciples are doing, you take care that they follow very faithfully chanting of 16 rounds daily, and following all of the rules and principles of Krishna conscious very strictly. You should immediately send their beads for chanting on to Karandhara das Adhikari in Los Angeles who is one of the senior disciples I have authorized to chant on beads. Then, after receiving the beads back from Karandhara you can hold a fire ceremony and perform the sacrifice as you have seen me doing so many times.

Letter to: Vaikunthanatha, Saradia — Bombay 4 April, 1971 :
Ask your wife to chant this mantra and you hear it and if possible hold a fire ceremony as you have seen during your marriage and get this sacred thread on your body. Saradia, or ANY twice-initiated DEVOTEE, may perform the ceremony.

(note: ¨devotee¨ is singular. ONE PERSON)

Letter to: Bhagavat Asraya — Mayapur 13 March, 1977
Now you may perform the Agnihotra on Rama Navami as you have proposed. The first initiate should vow to always follow the regulative principles and chant at least sixteen rounds daily. The brahmanas should be explained the qualities of brahminical life and be allowed to hear the gayatri tape in the right ear after the ceremony. The best way to instruct the initiates is by your own good example.

Letter to: Revatinandana — Bombay 4 January, 1973 :
Please accept my blessings. Just now I have received some more requests for giving first initiation from Dhananjaya, and now I am receiving weekly not less than ten to fifteen such requests from new students. So it is becoming very expensive to send so many sets of beads such long distance, and it has become little bothersome for me also, so I think now you may be appointed by me to give first initiations to new disciples by chanting on their beads on my behalf. In America Kirtanananda Swami is going that. So now if there are two of you that will give me great relief. Kirtanananda will chant on the beads for new devotees in America, Canada, like that, you can chant on the beads for the European continent new disciples.

They shall, of course, still be considered as my disciples, not that they shall become your disciples, but you will be empowered by me to chant their beads and that is the same effect of binding master and disciple as if I were personally chanting. They may continue to send me their letters of request, along the President’s recommendation, and I shall give them name and it will be entered by my Secretary in our records, only I will send my letter of reply to you and you will purchase beads there and chant them and send, along with my letter to the new initiates. Is that all right?

Letter to: Gurudasa — Los Angeles 22 June,
I have informed Hamsaduta that the five students in Hamburg who are now ready to receive Gayatri may do so when they visit your London temple during Rathayatra celebration. So I think you know all the procedures by now and you may give them the Gayatri as I have already prescribed by using the tape record of the mantras and performing the fire sacrifice.

Letter to: Bibhu — Los Angeles 21 May, 1972 :
I think my secretary has recently sent one copy of Gayatri Mantra for Kutila dasi and enclosed herewith please find one sacred thread and one copy of Gayatri Mantra for Mahendra dasa. EITHER YOU OR Ranadhira can hold a fire sacrifice and present sacred threads to Kutila and Mahendra.

Letters : 1974 Correspondence : August : Letter to: Abhirama: — Vrindaban 16 August, 1974 : 74-08-16 :
As you have suggested, you may hold a fire sacrifice and the beads may be chanted upon by Rupanuga Prabhu. You should impress upon the new disciples that they are taking vows before Radha and Krsna, the spiritual master, and the Vaisnavas. They must always chant at least 16 rounds daily and avoid the four sinful activities.

Letters : 1974 Correspondence : August : Letter to: Mahamsa: — Vrindaban 16 August, 1974 : 74-08-16 :
You may hold a fire sacrifice and chant on their beads and impress upon them they are taking vows before Radha and Krsna, the spiritual master, and the Vaisnavas. They must always chant 16 rounds daily and avoid the four sinful activities.

And so on. ¨EITHER YOU OR Ranadhira can hold a fire sacrifice …¨ implies to me that either ONE or the other ONE can perform the sacrifice. Where does Srila Prabhupada mention 4 rtviks to conduct the yajna?

According to Amar Puri’s philosophy, ¨backed¨ by this technical detail from Prabhupada’s purport to SB 7.3.30, Srila Prabhupada is bogus, because he repeatedly violated the ¨4 rtviks per sacrifice¨ principle and, as mentioned by Ramacandra Prabhu, he appointed persons, who were not up to Amar Puri’s imagined standard to act as rtviks. So what was the motive of Srila Prabhupada? What was the agenda?

Yes, the motive is very clear and that is, that in Kali-yuga these vedic sacrifices are impossible to be performed in proper dimensions and requirements as Srila Prabhupada repeatedly explains. But, because the kali-yugis can see only externally and cannot appreciate fully the purely spiritual significance of initiation, there has to be some show, some theatre for the eye, some entertainment, fire burning, seeds cracking… And shallow people like Amar Puri are very much attached to these external features of vedic system, so when such, for the execution of the vedic system in Kali-yuga quite irrelevant, detail is left out, they become super-alert.

The essence of his triggering this obnoxious blasphemy against Purujit Prabhu is not philosophical. As any intelligent person can see, the supposed reason – ommiting a portion of a purport which contains a detail irrelevant to what is being established i.e. qualification of a rtvik – is insignificant. The essence of Amar Puri’s comments is pure envy which is apparent from the personal platform on which he is slandering Purujit Prabhu without asking any questions for clarifying or understanding Prabhu’s frame of thoughts.

Then Amar Puri’s ¨samadhi¨ goes on: ¨I wonder what remains the personal MOTIVE of the compiler by not mentioning in his presentation in the BOOK under discussion and WHY the compiler ignores to state the remaining very important stated portion of the SB.7.3.30 purport.¨
So let me ask Amar Puri a question in similar fashion:

You have quoted SB 8.23.13, the ¨brahma-vadis¨ verse. But what remains your personal motive, that you ignore the following verses – SB 8.23.14 -- 15 and especially SB 8.23.26 and their purports, where it is established that simply by performing sankirtan-yajna everything becomes perfect, in opposition to your suggestion that 4 rtviks are an absolute necessity and that by leaving this information out a big big hidden agenda is now exposed?

That is quoted in Ramacandra Prabhu’s comment, but I shall put again:

¨There may be discrepancies in pronouncing the mantras and observing the regulative principles, and, moreover, there may be discrepancies in regard to time, place, person and paraphernalia. But when Your Lordship’s holy name is chanted, everything becomes faultless.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has recommended:

harer nāma harer nāma
harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva
nāsty eva gatir anyathā
[Adi 17.21]

“In this age of quarrel and hypocrisy the only means of deliverance is chanting the holy name of the Lord. There is no other way. There is no other way. There is no other way.” (Bṛhan-nāradīya Purāṇa 38.126) In this age of Kali, it is extremely difficult to perform Vedic ritualistic ceremonies or sacrifices perfectly. Hardly anyone can chant the Vedic mantras with perfect pronunciation or accumulate the paraphernalia for Vedic performances.

Therefore the sacrifice recommended in this age is saṅkīrtana, constant chanting of the holy name of the Lord. Yajñaiḥ saṅkīrtana-prāyair yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ (Bhāg. 11.5.29). Instead of wasting time performing Vedic sacrifices, those who are intelligent, those who possess good brain substance, should take to the chanting of the Lord’s holy name and thus perform sacrifice perfectly.

I have seen that many religious leaders are addicted to performing yajñas and spending hundreds and thousands of rupees for imperfect sacrificial performances. This is a lesson for those who unnecessarily execute such imperfect sacrifices. We should take the advice of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu (yajñaiḥ saṅkīrtana-prāyair yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ).

Although Śukrācārya was a strict brāhmaṇa addicted to ritualistic activities, he also admitted, niśchidram anusaṅkīrtanaṁ tava: “My Lord, constant chanting of the holy name of Your Lordship makes everything perfect.” In Kali-yuga the Vedic ritualistic ceremonies cannot be performed as perfectly as before. Therefore Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī has recommended that although one should take care to follow all the principles in every kind of spiritual activity, especially in worship of the Deity, there is still a chance of discrepancies, and one should compensate for this by chanting the holy name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

In our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement we therefore give special stress to the chanting of the HareKṛṣṇa mantra in all activities.¨

By the way, the context of the ¨brahma-vadis¨ verse is in connection with the appearance of Lord Vamanadeva which took place in Treta-yuga when performance of the yajna was the yuga-dharma. Now we have Kali-yuga though, I don’t know if you are aware of this fact. In Kali-yuga the yuga-dharma is harinama-sankirtana.

In our BHAKTIVEDANTA LIVES IN SOUND SOCIETY, under the blessed leadership of His Grace Sriman Purujit Prabhu, daily harinam and book distribution is going on in Canada ( and Europe ( Therefore there is no fault. But you see differently. What can be done?

Anyone who has heard about Mr. Freud knows about ¨self -defending¨ mechanisms. One of them, very strong and subtle, nevertheless visible, is ¨projection¨. We project OUR OWN thoughts, motives, angers etc. on OTHERS.

So, yes, His Grace Purujit Prabhu is distinguished from the weak, pale and stagnant mass of so called ¨Prabhupadanugas¨ who mostly (except for few glorious examples of active, enthusiastic, dynamic, inspired and happy devotees) spend their lives in useless chewing the chewed vomit of ¨bogus gurus, is the poison in the milk, K-GBC, JEW-B-C, pedophilia, murder, how iskcon has deviated, Hitler is so nice, they killed our Prabhupada¨ and similar issues -- by his tireless effort in positively spreading Krsna consciousness and the Holy Name all around.

Under his influence Prabhupada’s books are being translated (into french, polish, croatian, spanish, german, slovak, japanese, russian, hebrew). Under his influence there are temples being opened where ¨bewildered jivas¨ come, chant Hare Krsna, dance in ecstasy before Sri Panca-tattva and Srila Prabhupada, hear from the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam and become inspired to take up Krsna consciousness, begin to chant 16 rounds and abandon 4 sinful activities. This is the influence of Sriman Purujit Prabhu.

So far your influence is concerned, your influence in inspiring others to become Krsna conscious equals zero. That wouldn’t be the worst crime, not everyone can preach. Especially the dead man cannot do it. So that’s ok, let the dead man chill out, be a lazy fool, eat and sleep and shut up.

But we know that there is a clique of busy fools in Montreal, a flock of nonsense persons like you, so much so that on the basis of false rumors spread by a person who’s name is not worthy to be mentioned here an unfortunate devotee from Finland who donated $400 euros for future printing of Srila Prabhupada’s books in Slovakia asked for his donation back. I have the conversation stored. That is not even low-class, to donate and then withdraw, but because of propaganda such as the one we see here, he became bereft of the mercy to participate in the most glorious devotional activity, which is Prabhupada’s books distribution.

Thus a horrendous violence has been committed on this poor soul and people like you – envious rascals, snakes, liars, mudhas, naradhamas and aparadhis – are responsible for this hellish situation. Congratulations! Your ¨seva¨ has undoubtedly pleased Srila Prabhupada to the max. You have adopted the ¨service¨ of the watchdog of cyberspace, hunting down those who you consider deviant. But now you really bark up the wrong tree.

It is so, yes, Purujit Prabhu doesn’t actually have to cultivate a separate agenda to become praised by others and have fame. We are happy that you acknowledge his prestige and fame. Yet we never forget that to be chastised by a wise man is better than to be praised by a fool, so we are not very elated by your appreciation.

Srila Prabhupada describes in the Gita 10.4-5 : PURPORT :

Yaśaḥ, fame, should be according to Lord Caitanya, who said that a man is famous when he is known as a great devotee. That is real fame. If one has become a great man in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and it is known, then he is truly famous. One who does not have such fame is infamous.

Purujit Prabhu is an established devotee, a preacher of Krsna consciousness and therefore he is famous. You, rascal hidden in a hole not doing anything but simply criticizing on some completely irrelevant trifle, you are infamous. Naturally, when someone is praising Purujit Prabhu instead of you, it becomes very painful for you and then you have to spit venom like an obnoxious snake. But Srila Prabhupada tells us how to deal with nonsense people like yourself:

Cc. Madhya-lila : Madhya 1: The Later Pastimes of Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu : Madhya 1.218 : PURPORT

¨Śrīla Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says, chāḍiyā vaiṣṇava sevā nistāra pāyeche kebā: unless one serves a Vaiṣṇava, he cannot be delivered. The spiritual master initiates the disciple to deliver him, and if the disciple executes the order of the spiritual master and does not offend other Vaiṣṇavas, his path is clear. Consequently Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu requested all the Vaiṣṇavas present to show mercy toward the two brothers, Rūpa and Sanātana, who had just been initiated by the Lord.

When a Vaiṣṇava sees that another Vaiṣṇava is a recipient of the Lord’s mercy, he becomes very happy. Vaiṣṇavas are not envious. If a Vaiṣṇava, by the mercy of the Lord, is empowered by Him to distribute the Lord’s holy name all over the world, other Vaiṣṇavas become very joyful-that is, if they are truly Vaiṣṇavas. One who is envious of the success of a Vaiṣṇava is certainly not a Vaiṣṇava himself, but an ordinary mundane man. Envy and jealousy are manifested by mundane people, not by Vaiṣṇavas.

Why should a Vaiṣṇava be envious of another Vaiṣṇava who is successful in spreading the holy name of the Lord? An actual Vaiṣṇava is very pleased to accept another Vaiṣṇava who is bestowing the Lord’s mercy. A mundane person in the dress of a Vaiṣṇava should not be respected but rejected. This is enjoined in the śāstra (upekṣā). The word upekṣā means neglect. One should neglect an enviousperson. A preacher’s duty is to love the Supreme Personality of Godhead, make friendships with Vaiṣṇavas, show mercy to the innocent and reject or neglect those who are envious or jealous.

There are many jealous people in the dress of Vaiṣṇavas in this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, and they should be completely neglected. There is no need to serve a jealous person who is in the dress of a Vaiṣṇava. When Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura says chāḍiyā vaiṣṇava sevā nistāra payeche kebā, he is indicating an actual Vaiṣṇava, not an envious or jealous person in the dress of a Vaiṣṇava.¨

So, following this purport, you are nothing to us. We do not respect you, but reject you, and I request everyone who reads this to adopt the same attitude and thus save himself from the offence of vaisnava-aparadha which one may commit by accepting and identifying oneself with the garbage presented here by unfortunate rascals like Amar Puri and Amrit Singh.

As his Grace Ramacandra Prabhu has quoted: ¨Simply criticizing and no work, that is the business of inferior men. So do not be disturbed by them, go on with your work, increasing more and more. Never mind the jackals howl.¨

(Letter to: Nityananda — Bombay 25 November, 1972)

And if you do so, then I dare you to come to one of our centres, Montreal or Slovakia and do this under the observation of devotees. And when you succeed, i shall personally wash your feet, drink the thing and remain silent for 6 months.

But i have serious doubts about your sadhana, Amar Puri.
Dear learned readers, just take note of this:

Amar Puri says:

17. January 2017 at 2:23 am
This condition Jiva, the Author of the Book desires certain Prathistha similar to the present Iskcon system created by the conditioned Jivas known bla bla bla..

Amar Puri at 2:23 IN THE MORNING says this and that, nonsense… What is this? Instead of taking rest to be fresh for mangala-arati and nice morning japa, Amar Puri browses the internet to crusade against devotees and preachers of Krsna consciousness… Or are you some kind of an empowered soul, writing transcendental literature at half past two like Srila Prabhupada? When will you publish it? Just see the fun.

One last thing: instead of meditating on Krsna, Amar Puri meditates on the relationship of some insignificant Makhancora dasa, the author of the ¨Monk on the Road¨ (which is published on this website without my knowledge and permission, by the way. Maybe the administrator could shed a bit of light on this?) with Purujit Prabhu.
In order to save your time, so you can waste it in some other fruitless way, because we do not like to be meditated upon by you, I tell you here, that I accept His Grace Sriman Purujit Prabhu as my siksa-guru. He cultivated me intensely and extensively for the last 8 years and I fall flat at his lotus feet anywhere, anytime and without any reservation. I am ready to humbly, submissively and obediently serve and assist him in any way possible in his glorious effort to spread Krsna consciousness for the pleasure of Srila Prabhupada. So… No one can speak like this about you, right? Must hurt like hell… So, burn if you like… who can stop you?

My request to you, Amar Puri, is that at the very fag-end of your life, please do not set yourself on this path of spiritual suicide – vaisnava-aparadha.
You kindly appologize publicly to Purujit Prabhu and delete your blasphemous comments. That is my advise to you.

And this obscure figure of the name Amrit Singh, that is even not interesting to be adressed… simply quoting unrelated topics… Half-hen logic. You are half-hen yourself, you nonsense, why don’t you quote the whole vedabase folio here in order not to ommit something, so no one can be suspicious of your hidden agendas and cheating? Fool No.1.

your servant Makhancora dasa.
All Glories to Srila Prabhupada!

[PADA: Right, there are a lot of people who claim to be Prabhupadanugas, but they are actually not happy to see the success of the sincere Prabhupadanugas. So these opponents are sort of acting as agents of Kali to disrupt the sincere preaching -- while posing as "the most sincere" Srila Prabhupada devotees. Same thing happened to Srila Prabhupada, he said many of his "senior" God brothers were envious, and they were constantly attacking his work, and this envious process was giving him "depression repression, oppression."

Anyway, Purujit prabhu is doing the job, Madhu Pandit is doing the job, Akshaya Patra Jaipur, Sunnyvale Yatra, local Bay Area Prabhupadanugas,,, Jitarati's book printing folks -- and many other sincere people -- are all doing the job, and they should get the credit. And they will get the credit from Krishna for doing His work. And they will get extra credit from Krishna for doing His work in the face of so many envious opponents.

This same thing happens to us at PADA all the time, oh boo hoo, PADA is orchestrating suing the GBC over the changed books. A waste of laxmi! OK, well now tens of thousands of devotees want original books! That means the issue had to be dealt with.

Oh gimme a kleenex already, PADA is stopping ISKCON children from getting abused and young girls to be married off to much older men, oh forsooth! Well now, tens of thousands of devotees are gradually starting to discuss this issue as well -- but only after we brought it out. And many of the victims thanked us for saving them, when no one else would.

Oh no! This is another mundane criticism of the GBC, PADA is targetting Tamal's group with poisoning Prabhupada! He has to be stopped! Maybe, but now tens of thousands of devotees agree -- with PADA? Sorry, the issue had to be exposed as well. Its not something we need to dwell on constantly, but it needs to be known because it is part of the history of events.

Oh no, PADA is helping provide documents that are being used in a court case in India, to establish that Srila Prabhupada is the acharya. Well again, thousands of people now agree with PADA -- that Srila Prabhupada -- is the acharya. So a lot of people wanted to have us stopped over the years, and for the same reasons as they attack these other Prabhupadanugas, they are infiltrators from Kali Yuga. They just are not happy seeing the right things being done -- by anyone.

One ex-kuli summed it up nicely, the people who oppose PADA are the real reason the GBC's gurus are still in charge now. Good job guys! Anyway, we need to just move along. And we need to encourage these persons who are doing nice preaching to the public, and we need to stay positive and know we are making good progress on many fronts, i.e. books, kirtana, preaching, making new devotees, helping people understand the correct siddhanta, etc. -- and its increasing.
